Oils can be obtained by mechanical means (pressing to crush the seed and obtain the oil) or chemical means (solvent extraction, the most widely used being hexane).

The resulting oil is then filtered. It can also be refined. The various stages of refining are decolorization, deodorization, degumming and neutralization.
